Event and team

Flying display of a Vought F4U Corsair at Aéro Gatineau 2023, with commentary from the show announcer in French and partly in English. At the controls is Louis, a pilot from western New York State who grew up in Springville. His father, a World War II veteran, built a landing strip on the family farm after the war. Louis has logged several thousand hours in World War II fighters, such as the Corsair and the Mustang.

What you see

The routine combines passes and aerobatic figures. The commentator announces an eight-point roll at about 220 knots, with a maximum height of 1,500 feet above the ground. The Corsair then makes a tactical break into the pattern, the technique fighter pilots use to break formation and separate before landing. It then lowers the gear and lands keeping the tail up as long as possible.

The aircraft on display

Louis's Corsair is one of those the US Navy sent to New Zealand during World War II. It flies regularly in air shows and in formation with the Navy's F-35C and F-18 Hornet. It is powered by an R-2800 engine. Other aircraft of the era also flew at the same show: the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Warhawk.
