Explanation of the Basler BT-67, the turbine conversion of the Douglas DC-3. Basler Turbo Conversions, founded in 1990 in Oshkosh (Wisconsin) based on an idea by Warren Basler in the 1980s, rebuilds DC-3 and C-47 airframes. It replaces the wingtips and part of the leading edge, lengthens the fuselage ahead of the wing (from about 25.6 to about 34.7 m³ of interior volume) and fits two five-blade Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R turboprops. It also rebuilds the electrical and hydraulic systems and installs modern avionics. The resulting aircraft is lighter: about 7,260 kg operating weight versus about 8,080 kg. Its maximum payload reaches about 6,350 kg and it can carry tanks that double its fuel. Kenn Borek Air operates nine examples in the Arctic and Antarctica, also fitted with skis.
