Video from the channel Kabel Eins about Douglas DC-3, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 11:14. Language: German. Video type: Onboard.

What it covers

Episode of the television programme Morlock Motors following the flight of a 1944 Douglas DC-3 from Mendig airfield to a stopover in Bari, Italy, the first leg of an expedition to search for treasure in Greece. The team loads the aircraft to the limit with a boat, generators, satellite equipment, diving gear and air rebreathers.

Details shown

The departure is rushed: the runway can only be used for about fifteen minutes before it closes to set up a festival, and the flight plan requires arriving in Bari within a specific time window. The crew already knew that a door was missing a small panel and could open in flight. After starting the engines and taking off, a window opens and, at the same time, the hydraulic system runs out of oil. While one crew member searches for the oil in the cargo hold, others hold and close the window at about 2,000 m altitude. The flight continues over the Alps in a cabin with no heating or sound insulation, with public-address announcements in the style of earlier eras.

Context

After about four and a half hours of flight, the DC-3 lands in Bari at dusk, while another part of the team reaches southern Italy by road and ferry.
