A brief look at the history of the Douglas DC-3, which Douglas Aircraft Company developed in the 1930s to offer an efficient, profitable and comfortable aircraft with room for between 21 and 32 passengers. It had a metal fuselage, Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines and reclining seats, and allowed commercial flights to turn a profit without public subsidies. It first flew in December 1935. In World War II, as the C-47 Skytrain, it carried troops and supplies, and on D-Day more than 800 C-47s dropped paratroopers behind enemy lines. It lacked weapons and armor, but was easy to repair. After the war, thousands of units moved into civilian use, and as of 2024 it is still flying on cargo missions and sightseeing flights.
