Flying the legendary DC-3!
Video from the channel Flightradar24 about Douglas DC-3, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 17:28. Language: English. Video type: Onboard.
What the flight covers
A sightseeing flight aboard Daisy, a roughly 80-year-old DC-3, from Västerås airport, an hour's drive west of Stockholm, organised for the Flightradar24 team's summer party. The route crossed Lake Mälaren heading south, passed over the town of Eskilstuna and headed back north for a loop over Västerås before landing, in about 20 minutes of low-altitude flying.
What can be seen
The video shows the aircraft on the ground, boarding and the safety briefing given by a volunteer flight attendant, who points to the entry door and several windows at the rear as emergency exits. Being a tailwheel aircraft, the cabin tilts on the ground and passengers walk uphill to their seats; during the takeoff run the tail lifts first and the floor becomes almost level. The noise of its engines stands out, very different from that of modern propellers.
Context
Daisy flew on D-Day as a military aircraft and later with SAS. It is maintained by the Swedish organisation Flygande Veteraner, which also runs a museum at the airport and organises flights; its pilots are commercial pilots who do it as a hobby in their free time.
