Convair
Convair was an American aircraft manufacturer created in 1943 by the merger of Consolidated Aircraft and Vultee Aircraft, with most of its design and production work concentrated in San Diego County, southern California. General Dynamics bought the company in March 1953, and for most of its corporate life Convair operated as a division of that conglomerate. Its reputation rests largely on military work: alongside France's Dassault it pioneered the delta wing, and it built the B-36 Peacemaker strategic bomber, the supersonic B-58 Hustler and the F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta Dart interceptors. On the civil side it produced the CV-240 family of propeller-driven twins and then entered the jet airliner market with the Convair 880 and Convair 990, faster than the Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8 but commercial failures. Convair was also a founding house of American spaceflight: it built the first Atlas rockets, including those that launched the crewed orbital flights of Project Mercury, and the Centaur upper stage, the first widely used stage burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. General Dynamics sold off the divisions between 1992 and 1994 and deactivated what remained of the Convair Division in 1996.
History
From Consolidated and Vultee to Convair
The older branch of the house was the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation, formed in 1923 by Major Reuben H. Fleet. Consolidated reached the Second World War with two decisive products: the B-24 Liberator heavy bomber, of which roughly 18,500 were built by the company and a network of major contractors — enough to make it the most-produced bomber in history — and the PBY Catalina patrol flying boat, which stayed in production until May 1945 and passed 4,000 examples. In 1943, by then under AVCO control, Consolidated merged with Vultee Aircraft and the combination came to be called Convair, first informally and then officially. The new manufacturer ranked fourth among United States corporations by the value of wartime production contracts, ahead of giants such as Douglas, Boeing and Lockheed.
The delta wing and the jet airliners
In March 1953 General Dynamics bought the whole company and turned it into its Convair Division. These were the years of the firm's greatest technical influence: together with Dassault it explored the delta wing systematically and applied it to the F-102 and F-106 interceptors and to the supersonic intercontinental nuclear bomber B-58 Hustler. It also kept the B-36 in service, the largest land-based piston-engined bomber in the world, with a mixed ten-engine arrangement of four turbojets and six Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radials driving pusher propellers. The civil jet venture went far worse: the Convair 880 flew on 27 January 1959 and the 990 Coronado on 24 January 1961, but only 65 and 37 were built respectively and the company left airliner design behind. The industrial capacity built up for them did pay off as subcontract work, and Convair went on to make fuselages and large airframe sections for McDonnell Douglas, Boeing and Lockheed.
Missiles, Atlas and Centaur
From the 1950s onwards the company shifted money and engineers towards missiles and rockets. It produced the Terrier shipborne surface-to-air system and, above all, revived the Atlas, a 1945 proposal built around a thin-walled pressurised airframe that in the following decade became an intercontinental ballistic missile for the Air Force. It first launched in 1957 and its military career was short — the Titan II displaced it in 1962 and the solid-fuelled Minuteman followed — but as a civil launcher it lasted for decades: it carried the crewed orbital flights of Project Mercury in 1962 and 1963 and, paired with the Centaur upper stage, became the workhorse for geosynchronous satellites and planetary probes. Centaur itself, also a Convair design, was the first widely used stage to burn the cryogenic combination of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, a direct precursor of the Saturn V S-II and S-IVB stages; it began flying with the Surveyor lunar landers from 1966. More than a hundred Atlas-Centaur vehicles launched over a hundred satellites and science missions, among them Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, the first probes sent on trajectories out of the Solar System.
Dismantling
The end came piecemeal. General Dynamics announced the sale of the Missile Systems Division to Hughes Aircraft in May 1992; in 1993 it handed the Fort Worth plant, and the intellectual property of everything designed there, to Lockheed; and in 1994 it sold the Space Systems Division to Martin Marietta and the aircraft structures unit to McDonnell Douglas. In July 1994 General Dynamics and McDonnell Douglas agreed to terminate the contract under which Convair supplied MD-11 fuselages, and that termination sealed the end of the division and of the company's presence in San Diego, where it had once employed 18,000 people. The Kearny Mesa complex was demolished between 1994 and 1996, and in 1996 General Dynamics deactivated the last legal entities of the Convair Division, closing an aircraft-building tradition the city had sustained for seven decades.

Convair 880
The Convair 880 was an American narrow-body jet airliner that first flew on 27 January 1959 and entered service with Delta Air Lines in 1960. Marketed on sheer speed, it proved a commercial failure, with only 65 aircraft built.

Convair 990 Coronado
The Convair 990 Coronado was the last jet airliner designed and built by Convair, the San Diego division of General Dynamics, and the fastest four-engined passenger jet of its generation. It grew out of a specific request from American Airlines, which wanted an aircraft able to fly non-stop from New York to Los Angeles against the prevailing wind and to carry more passengers than the Convair 880; Boeing had flatly refused to build one. Convair's answer, known internally as the Model 600 and redesignated 990 in the very month of its first flight, was an 880 stretched by some 3 m, raising capacity from the 88 to 110 seats of its predecessor to between 96 and 121 — fewer than a Boeing 707 (110 to 189) or a Douglas DC-8 (105 to 173), but 25 to 35 mph (40 to 56 km/h) faster than either in cruise. Its unmistakable visual signature was the set of four anti-shock bodies, or "Whitcomb bodies", carried on the wing trailing edge: a literal application of the area rule intended to raise the critical Mach number by cutting transonic drag, and used as additional fuel tankage as well. Power came from four General Electric CJ805-23 engines, turbofans with the fan stage mounted behind the turbine — a solution unique at the time, against the front-fan Pratt & Whitney JT3D of its rivals — civil, non-afterburning derivatives of the J79 turbojet of supersonic fighters, and every bit as smoky. The 990 first flew on 24 January 1961 and entered service in 1962, but it never met its promised figures: real drag far exceeded the predictions, American Airlines cut its order, and not even the reworked 990A delivered the non-stop transcontinental capability that justified the programme. By the time the line closed in 1963 only 37 had been built, and the combined losses of the 880 and 990 rank among the largest in American corporate history. Withdrawn by the major carriers from 1967 onwards, the Coronado enjoyed a long second life on charter work — Spantax was its last big operator — and a third as a NASA flying laboratory, in use until the mid-1990s.
