Video from the channel San Diego Air and Space Museum Archives about Convair, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 4:46. Language: English. Video type: Archive footage.
Period film showing the first flight of the Convair 600, the Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop version of the 240/340/440 family, on the ground, taking off and in flight.
It was filmed on 20 May 1965 in San Diego, California. The flight lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes, with the chief test pilot at the controls.
The narration presents the turbine conversion as a way of extending the life of the piston-engined Convairs, with lower operating costs, 2,850 lb more maximum payload and 50 mph more cruising speed. At the time there were 51 aircraft on order, and the plane was beginning trials for Federal Aviation Agency certification.
