Il Saab 340 è un turboelica regionale bimotore da 30 a 36 passeggeri, nato da una collaborazione tra Saab e Fairchild, che volò per la prima volta il 25 gennaio 1983. Arrivò a essere l'aereo commuter più venduto al mondo e ne furono costruiti 459 esemplari fino al 1999.

All'inizio degli anni Ottanta la svedese Saab e la statunitense Fairchild unirono le forze per attaccare il crescente mercato dell'aviazione regionale con un bimotore turboelica pensato per una capacità tra 30 e 36 passeggeri. L'aereo, spinto da due motori General Electric CT7, effettuò il primo volo il 25 gennaio 1983 ed entrò in servizio commerciale nel 1984, con la svizzera Crossair tra i suoi primi operatori.
La bontà del progetto risultò evidente da subito: poco dopo il lancio, il Saab 340 divenne l'aereo commuter più venduto al mondo, con un portafoglio clienti distribuito tra Europa, America e Pacifico. Fairchild finì per abbandonare il programma e Saab assunse da sola la produzione, che proseguì fino al 1999, quando le perdite accumulate dal settore degli aerei regionali portarono l'azienda a chiudere la linea dopo 459 esemplari.
Lungi dallo scomparire, il 340 ha dimostrato una notevole longevità: decenni dopo la fine della produzione resta in servizio attivo in compiti di trasporto passeggeri, cargo e impieghi speciali, e ha inoltre fatto da base a un derivato allungato, il Saab 2000.
