Il Falcon 9 è il lanciatore che ha cambiato le regole dell'accesso allo spazio: un razzo a due stadi il cui primo stadio torna indietro, atterra in piedi e vola di nuovo — qualcosa che l'industria riteneva economicamente impossibile finché SpaceX non l'ha trasformato in routine. Nacque dal programma commerciale della NASA della metà degli anni Duemila, quando l'agenzia scelse di acquistare trasporto da imprese private invece di progettare i propri razzi. SpaceX, che veniva dal piccolo Falcon 1, rispose con un lanciatore a nove motori che debuttò il 4 giugno 2010. Il 21 dicembre 2015 riuscì in un'impresa mai vista: posare il primo stadio di un razzo orbitale nuovamente sulla terraferma. Da allora il riutilizzo ha smesso di essere un esperimento — con atterraggi su chiatte in mezzo all'oceano, stadi che accumulano decine di voli e una cadenza di lancio senza precedenti nella storia. Oggi il Falcon 9 è il cavallo di battaglia dell'accesso allo spazio occidentale: porta astronauti alla stazione spaziale, dispiega la costellazione Starlink e lancia più volte all'anno di tutti i suoi concorrenti messi insieme, con un prezzo al chilo che ha ridefinito il mercato.
Storia
Il Falcon 9 debuttò il 4 giugno 2010 e trasformò l'accesso allo spazio: nel dicembre 2015 realizzò il primo atterraggio propulsivo di un primo stadio orbitale, e da allora il riutilizzo è la norma della famiglia.
Origine
SpaceX annunciò il Falcon 9 nel 2005, quando non aveva ancora raggiunto l'orbita con il suo piccolo Falcon 1. La spinta decisiva arrivò dalla NASA: il programma commerciale di carico — con il contratto COTS del 2006 e i servizi di rifornimento appaltati nel 2008 — finanziò allo stesso tempo il razzo e la capsula Dragon, in una scommessa dell'agenzia sull'acquistare trasporto anziché possedere razzi. Il progetto riunì nove motori Merlin nel primo stadio, con la ridondanza come filosofia: il razzo può perdere un motore e portare comunque a termine la missione.
Evoluzione
Dal Falcon 9 originale del 2010 si passò nel 2013 alla versione v1.1, più lunga e potente, e nel 2015 alla Full Thrust con propellenti superraffreddati. L'iterazione culminò nel 2018 con il Block 5, la versione definitiva, ottimizzata per riutilizzare ogni stadio una volta dopo l'altra con un ricondizionamento minimo. Ogni versione fu un gradino deliberato verso lo stesso obiettivo: fare in modo che buttare via il razzo dopo ogni volo smettesse di essere normale.
La conquista del riutilizzo
Dopo anni di prove — e di fallimenti spettacolari sulla chiatta —, il 21 dicembre 2015 un primo stadio atterrò a Cape Canaveral pochi minuti dopo il decollo. Nel 2017 uno stadio già usato tornò a volare per la prima volta. Quel che seguì fu un accumulo silenzioso di record: atterraggi sulle chiatte oceaniche diventati routine, singoli stadi capaci di superare le decine di voli e il prezzo dell'accesso all'orbita in caduta di conseguenza.
Il cavallo di battaglia
Nel 2020 il Falcon 9 restituì agli Stati Uniti il volo con equipaggio grazie alla Crew Dragon, e da allora porta astronauti alla stazione spaziale con regolarità. Il grosso della sua cadenza lo fornisce Starlink, la costellazione di SpaceX, che ha trasformato il lancio orbitale in un'operazione quasi quotidiana: la famiglia ha superato i 400 e poi i 500 voli in una manciata di anni, qualcosa di inedito per un lanciatore orbitale.
Eredità
Il Falcon 9 ha dimostrato che il riutilizzo propulsivo funziona sul piano tecnico e su quello commerciale, e ha costretto tutta l'industria — dall'Europa alla Cina — a ridisegnare i propri lanciatori attorno a quell'idea. Poche macchine hanno spostato tanto la frontiera del possibile nello spazio dai tempi dello shuttle.
