Historical background

The programme began in the mid-1980s as a collaboration between Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain. The aircraft first flew on 27 March 1994 and entered service on 4 August 2003; the Royal Air Force received it on 30 June 2003. In Italy, the 9th Gruppo of the 4th Stormo was the first unit to receive it, on 16 March 2004, replacing the F-104 ASA-M. Italy declared initial operational capability on 16 December 2005, the first of the four partners to do so, and its first mission was protecting the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. The video then covers the air defence of Slovenia, Albania and Montenegro and Operation Unified Protector in Libya in 2011. This is followed by missions over the Baltic and Iceland, Operation Shader against the Islamic State since 2015, the Italian deployment to Kuwait within Inherent Resolve, the deployment to Romania in 2019, and its use as an aggressor aircraft in the RAF since 2020. Besides the four partners, it is also operated by Saudi Arabia and Austria.
