What it's about

Documentary about the Eurofighter Typhoon that opens with a dramatized combat scene and then covers the origin of the programme, the design, the engines, the sensors, the armament and electronic warfare.

Historical context

According to the narration, in the late 1970s and early 1980s NATO's European air forces were flying the Tornado, Jaguar, F-4 Phantom and Mirage, which were inadequate against the new Soviet fighters. Development began in 1983 as the European Future Fighter programme. France withdrew to develop the Rafale, and the consortium, made up of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain, was formally established in 1986. The first prototype flew in 1994 and the aircraft entered service in 2003.

Key facts

It combines a delta wing and canards with a four-channel digital flight control system that manages its intentional instability. The structure is made of composites, with 70% carbon fibre and 12% glass fibre. Two EJ200 engines with about 20,000 lb of thrust with afterburner allow supercruise at close to Mach 1.5 and a ceiling above 55,000 feet. The radar evolved from the mechanically scanned CAPTOR-M to the electronically scanned CAPTOR-E, alongside the PIRATE passive infrared sensor. The Meteor missile stands out, with a ramjet, more than Mach 4 and a range of over 100 km, in addition to Storm Shadow, Brimstone and Paveway. The Praetorian DASS from the EuroDASS consortium (BAE Systems, Elettronica and Indra) and the MIDS datalink round out the system, and the RAF has unveiled the StormShroud uncrewed aircraft to operate alongside it.
