The car won the first heat, over 600 m, in 9.4 s versus 9.6; the aircraft won the 1,200 m heat (14.2 s versus 16.7) and the decisive 900 m heat (13.0 s versus 13.2), on a wet runway.
It was filmed at Baccarini military airport, in Tuscany, in front of thousands of spectators and broadcast live on Italian television; the title dates it to 11 December 2003.
Cheli, a former Italian Air Force fighter pilot and ESA astronaut, was at the time chief test pilot for one of the companies that build the aircraft.
