O Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante é um avião ligeiro de transporte bimotor turbo-hélice concebido no Brasil para usos civis e militares. O seu nome evoca os bandeirantes, os colonos portugueses que foram penetrando no interior do atual Brasil durante os séculos XVI e XVII. Concebeu-o o engenheiro francês Max Holste seguindo as especificações do programa IPD-6504 que o Ministério da Aeronáutica brasileiro publicou em 1965, com o objetivo de obter um avião polivalente, fiável e de baixo custo operacional, adaptado à infraestrutura aeroportuária do país. O protótipo YC-95 voou a 26 de outubro de 1968, pilotado por José Mariotto Ferreira, com o engenheiro de voo Michel Cury a bordo, num voo de cerca de cinquenta minutos. O seu bom comportamento levou a aprovar a produção em meados de 1969 e, com ela, a criação da Embraer, que assumiu o fabrico a 2 de janeiro de 1970. O desenho inicial de oito lugares foi refeito como EMB 110, com maior capacidade; certificado no final de 1972, entrou ao serviço a 16 de abril de 1973 com a companhia aérea brasileira Transbrasil. Em configuração típica leva entre 15 e 21 passageiros e dois pilotos, e admite numerosas adaptações: observação aérea, patrulha marítima, busca e salvamento, ambulância, calibração de radioajudas ou prospeção geofísica. A produção prolongou-se por vinte e dois anos e terminou em 1990, quando a Embraer concentrou os seus recursos no maior e pressurizado EMB 120 Brasilia.

Uma encomenda do Ministério da Aeronáutica
A origem do Bandeirante está na diretiva que o Ministério da Aeronáutica brasileiro emitiu em 1965, pedindo um transporte apto para operações civis e militares, fiável e barato de operar. Devia levar motores turbo-hélice, asa baixa e capacidade para oito ocupantes, condições extraídas de um estudo do tráfego aéreo comercial brasileiro e pensadas para encaixar nos aeroportos existentes no país. O projeto exigiu 110.000 horas de trabalho, 12.000 desenhos de fabrico e 22.000 horas de cálculo estrutural e aerodinâmico, além de cerca de 282.000 horas estimadas de fabrico e ferramental. O resultado, o protótipo YC-95 ou EMB 100, voou a 26 de outubro de 1968 propulsionado por dois Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-20.
Nasce a Embraer e chega o EMB 110
O bom resultado dos ensaios levou a aprovar a produção em meados de 1969 e a criar a empresa que ficaria encarregada dela: a Embraer assumiu a responsabilidade a 2 de janeiro de 1970. O segundo protótipo voou a 19 de outubro de 1969 e o terceiro a 29 de junho de 1970. Nessa altura o mercado já mudara e um avião de oito lugares parecia pouco atraente, pelo que foi rapidamente redesenhado como EMB 110 Bandeirante, com mais capacidade e várias melhorias técnicas, motorizado com PT6A-27 de 680 shp. A certificação chegou no final de 1972; as entregas à Força Aérea Brasileira, que encomendara oitenta aparelhos de transporte, começaram em fevereiro de 1973, e o serviço de linha com a Transbrasil a 16 de abril desse ano. A versão espanhola da enciclopédia situa o primeiro voo do modelo de passageiros a 9 de agosto de 1972.
Uma família numerosa
O Bandeirante declinou-se em dezenas de subvariantes: transporte militar C-95, calibrador de radioajudas EMB 110A, fotografia aérea EMB 110B, cargueiro EMB 110K1, executivo de sete lugares, busca e salvamento SC-95, prospeção geofísica EMB 110S1 e o patrulha marítima EMB 111, designado P-95 no Brasil, do qual a Armada do Chile recebeu seis unidades. Serviu também de ambulância aérea no México entre 1979 e 1982. Os números de produção variam consoante a fonte: a enciclopédia inglesa contabiliza 503 aparelhos entre 1968 e 1990, enquanto a espanhola dá 494 unidades. Mais de uma centena serviram na Força Aérea Brasileira, que a 15 de dezembro de 2010 voou o primeiro exemplar modernizado como C/P-95, com aviónica nova instalada pela filial brasileira da Elbit Systems; nessa altura mantinha 96 aparelhos ativos e em 2017 continuavam operacionais 48.
