Bristol Aeroplane Company

The Bristol Aeroplane Company, founded as the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company, was at once one of the earliest and one of the most important British aviation firms, and among the few that designed and built both airframes and aero engines. Its works were at Filton aerodrome, a few miles north of the centre of Bristol, a site where BAE Systems, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, MBDA and GKN still have a presence today. The company's catalogue traces half a century of British aviation: the Boxkite on which the country's first pilots learned to fly, the Bristol Fighter of the First World War, the Bulldog fighter of the interwar years, the Blenheim light bomber, the multirole Beaufighter and the transatlantic Britannia turboprop. It also built helicopters — the Sycamore and the Belvedere — the Bloodhound anti-aircraft missile, and much of the preliminary work that led to Concorde. In its engine division, inherited from the bankrupt Cosmos Engineering, Roy Fedden developed the Jupiter radial and its successors until Bristol dominated the world market for air-cooled radial engines. The company was split in 1956 into Bristol Aircraft and Bristol Aero Engines: the first ended up inside the British Aircraft Corporation and, after nationalisation, in British Aerospace; the second merged with Armstrong Siddeley as Bristol Siddeley and finished in the hands of Rolls-Royce.

History

A tramway man with foresight

Sir George White, chairman of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company, met Wilbur Wright by chance in France in 1909 and came away convinced of aviation's commercial potential. In February 1910, with his son Stanley and his brother Samuel, he founded the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company — an exception among the air ventures of the day. Instead of springing from enthusiasm without backing, it started with twenty-five thousand pounds of working capital subscribed entirely by the three of them. It set up in a pair of former tram sheds at Filton leased from the tramway company, from which it also recruited its chief engineer and works manager, George Challenger. The first project, a French biplane built under licence, was an outright failure; Challenger then drew up in little more than a week an aircraft of his own based on a Henri Farman design whose dimensions had appeared in the aeronautical press. It flew at Larkhill in July 1910, earned the nickname Boxkite and was built in more than seventy examples, sold to the War Office and to several foreign governments. The company's flying schools at Brooklands and Larkhill mattered enormously: by 1914 close to half of all Royal Aero Club certificates issued had been earned there.

Designers, war and the Bristol Fighter

A remarkable roll of engineers passed through the Filton drawing office. The Romanian engineer Henri Coandă was appointed chief designer in January 1912; he was succeeded in October 1914 by Frank Barnwell, who had joined for a secret naval aircraft project and became one of the world's foremost aeronautical engineers, working for the company until his death in 1938. When the First World War broke out the Royal Flying Corps had barely a hundred aircraft and seven squadrons, none of them armed, and official policy was to buy only state-designed types; pressure from the pilots opened the door to the Bristol Scout. Barnwell's office then produced the F.2A and, from its development, the F.2B Fighter, one of the outstanding aircraft of the war and a mainstay of the RAF through the 1920s: more than 5,300 were built and the type stayed in service until 1931.

Engines, steel and rearmament

In 1920 British and Colonial was liquidated and its assets transferred to the Bristol Aeroplane Company. At the Air Ministry's prompting, the new firm bought the aero engine division of the bankrupt Cosmos Engineering for fifteen thousand pounds, bringing with it Roy Fedden's design team. The venture took years to show a profit, but the Jupiter radial and its successors became an enormous success: through the interwar period the engine division was more profitable than its parent, and Bristol came to dominate the market for air-cooled radials, powering aircraft from a great many other manufacturers. On the airframe side the company was noted for preferring high-tensile steel structures to the light alloys generally used elsewhere. Its Bulldog fighter was the backbone of RAF fighter strength between 1930 and 1937 and, having begun as a private venture, could be exported to Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Australia among others. On 15 June 1935 the company became a public limited company with a payroll of some 4,200, most of them in the engine factory, just as the British government ordered a huge rearmament programme to which Bristol's chief contribution was the Blenheim light bomber. By the outbreak of war in 1939 the Filton works were the largest single aircraft manufacturing unit in the world; its decisive wartime product was the Beaufighter, a heavy two-seat multirole machine derived from the Beaufort and that in turn from the Blenheim.

Britannia, Concorde and the final carve-up

The postwar years brought ambitious projects and uneven results. The vast Brabazon flew in 1949 and was cancelled in 1953 having attracted no interest from military or civil operators; in parallel the company backed the Britannia, a turboprop able to cross the Atlantic that proved a technical success and a commercial disappointment — ordered by BOAC in 1949 and first flown in 1952, it did not enter service until 1957 and only eighty-two were built. Better fortune attended the Type 170 Freighter, the helicopters of the division run by Raoul Hafner — the Sycamore and the Belvedere — and the Bloodhound, at its introduction the RAF's only long-range transportable surface-to-air missile. In the late 1950s the firm studied supersonic transports and built the Type 188, a stainless-steel research aircraft meant to test the feasibility of an airframe capable of Mach 2; by the time it flew, in 1962, the company no longer existed as an independent concern. Its main operations had been split in 1956 into Bristol Aircraft and Bristol Aero Engines, the latter merging in 1958 with Armstrong Siddeley to form Bristol Siddeley, held equally with the Hawker Siddeley group. The airframe arm was compelled by government policy to merge with English Electric, Hunting Aircraft and Vickers-Armstrongs to create the British Aircraft Corporation, in which Bristol held a twenty per cent share. In 1966 Rolls-Royce bought the Bristol holding company, and in 1977 the nationalisation of BAC alongside Hawker Siddeley and Scottish Aviation produced British Aerospace.

    Bristol Britannia

    The Bristol Type 175 Britannia was a British medium-to-long-range turboprop airliner, conceived by the Bristol Aeroplane Company for the Empire routes and universally remembered as "The Whispering Giant" for its quiet exterior noise and smooth flight. It grew out of BOAC's Medium Range Empire requirement and the Brabazon Committee's Type III contract, received the company designation Model 175 in July 1948 and first flew on 16 August 1952 at Filton, with chief test pilot A. J. "Bill" Pegg at the controls. Its development, however, was among the most painful in the post-war British industry. The four Bristol Proteus turboprops — reverse-flow, free-turbine engines — suffered gearbox failures, excess weight and, above all, three successive kinds of intake icing that caused in-flight flame-outs. Two prototypes were lost, and the certification demands tightened after the de Havilland Comet crashes added months of testing. Entry into service, expected in 1955, slipped to 1 February 1957, roughly two years late. That delay settled its commercial fate. By the time the aircraft was mature, the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 were imminent: serious interest from Eastern Air Lines and TWA — Howard Hughes flew it himself and immediately asked for thirty aircraft — could not be met for lack of production capacity. Only 85 were built, thirty of them by Short Brothers and Harland at Belfast, against a projected 180, and the line closed in 1960. For all that, the Britannia was loved by passengers and respected by its crews, a landmark in turboprop airliner design and an extraordinarily long-lived platform. It served with BOAC on the first non-stop London-Canada and London-New York services, equipped RAF Transport Command with twenty-three aircraft named after stars, and after military retirement in 1975 found a long second life as a freighter. Canadair bought the licence and derived a further 72 aircraft from it: the CL-44/CC-106 Yukon and the CP-107 Argus maritime patrol aircraft. Cubana de Aviación flew its Britannias until March 1990, and Zairean airlines kept them hauling cargo into the early 1990s.
