A short animation explaining how a launch of the Falcon 9, SpaceX's two-stage rocket, works, going through the vehicle from bottom to top.

The first stage uses nine Merlin engines and can compensate for the failure of one or two; it carries the rocket to about 100 km in altitude before separating. The second, with a single Merlin, carries the payload to its orbit.

The first stage returns guided by grid fins and with three burns: the boostback burn, which steers it toward the landing site; the reentry burn, which slows it from about 1,300 m/s to about 250 m/s; and the landing burn, which leaves it at about 2 m/s above a barge at sea.
