Only the pilot and co-pilot had one. At the back, the seats rotated and an inflatable cushion pushed the crew member towards the entry hatch, located just in front of the nose wheel when the gear was down. Former crew members recall colleagues who died this way.
According to the testimonies, in 10 of the 15 Vulcan accidents all the rear crew members died. Peter West recounts a bird strike that set fire to the two starboard engines of XH558 itself, which kept flying with a large hole in the wing.
