Short piece reviewing the career of the Avro Vulcan, the British delta-wing bomber conceived during the Cold War to carry the United Kingdom's nuclear weapon.
It first flew in 1952. With four jet engines it exceeded 1,000 km/h and carried a crew of five. For years it remained on alert, ready to take off within minutes, and when enemy radars improved it switched to flying at very low altitude.
By the late seventies it was beginning to be replaced, but in 1982, during the Falklands War, it flew in Operation Black Buck: nearly 13,000 km with several in-flight refuellings. It was retired after the conflict, and several examples are preserved in museums.
