The Antonov An-24 is a Soviet twin-turboprop regional transport that first flew on 29 October 1959 and entered service in 1962. Designed to operate from rough airstrips, it became one of the most numerous regional aircraft of the Soviet bloc, with more than 1,367 examples built.

History

In the late 1950s Soviet regional aviation still relied on the piston-engined Ilyushin Il-14, and the Antonov bureau was tasked with replacing it on short- to medium-haul routes. The answer was the An-24, a high-wing design with two Ivchenko AI-24 turboprops conceived specifically for remote airfields and unprepared strips, where ruggedness mattered more than refinement. The prototype took off on 29 October 1959 and the type entered service in 1962.

The most widespread passenger version, the An-24V, seated 50 passengers with a crew of three and offered a maximum range of 2,400 km on full fuel. Production was shared between the Kyiv, Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude factories, and by the time the main line closed in 1976 well over a thousand airframes had been completed, with the overall total exceeding 1,367 aircraft. In China the design continued in licensed production as the Xi'an Y-7, extending the industrial life of the programme.

More than six decades after its first flight, the An-24 remains in service with civil and military operators in several countries, a testament to the simplicity and durability of its design. Its airframe also served as the basis for a whole family of transport derivatives that inherited its austere operating philosophy.
