History

Two hundred aircraft in two years

Two hundred An-24As were built — 9 in 1962 and 191 in 1963 — delivered directly from the Kiev factory. Against the first series, this improved version seated 44 passengers and offered a larger interior volume; externally it is recognised by the APU exhaust moved to the tip of the starboard nacelle. The Spanish Wikipedia gives 50 seats for this second version, a figure that disagrees with the English article's 44 and is recorded without choosing between them.

A reused designation

This was the second time the An-24A designation was used. The first belonged to a project intended to use Kuznetsov NK-4 turboprops, abandoned when the NK-4 was cancelled; the name was later reused for this production version with a different engine.

The airframe that took everything

Most of the type's special-mission conversions were made on An-24A airframes: the An-24ALK for navigation satellite calibration — previously the An-24LR «Toros» for air defence surveillance — the An-24LL flying laboratory, the An-24R photo-reconnaissance prototype, the twelve An-24PRT search and rescue aircraft, and in the 1990s the North Korean installation of N-019 Topaz radars on at least one aircraft to obtain a rudimentary airborne early warning capability.
