Video from the channel PeriscopeFilm about Project Gemini, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 12:03. Language: English. Video type: Archive footage.
What it shows
NASA film titled «Gemini: The Twins» that recalls the flights of the Mercury program and presents the preparation of Project Gemini: tests of the spacecraft's systems with the astronauts' participation, seaworthiness trials, academic and survival training, the translation-and-docking simulator and the full-mission simulator, ending with the launches of Gemini 3 and Gemini 4 and Edward White's spacewalk.
When and where it was filmed
1965 footage with images of Cape Canaveral, of test and training facilities, and of a trial in the Gulf of Mexico in which a spacecraft spent 17 hours in the water with astronauts aboard. It intersperses testimony from several astronauts, such as Alan Shepard and Edward White.
Context
The film presents Gemini as an advance over Mercury: a two-person crew, attitude control, in-flight orbit changes, missions of up to 14 days, and rendezvous and docking techniques with the Agena target vehicle, essential for a future Moon landing. The crews of the first flights spent more than a hundred hours in the mission simulator. Gemini 3, with Virgil Grissom and John Young, was the first crewed qualification flight; 72 days later, James McDivitt and Edward White began the four days of Gemini 4, during whose third orbit White became the first American to maneuver outside the spacecraft.
