It sets the starting point in 1961, the year of Yuri Gagarin's first crewed spaceflight on April 12 and John F. Kennedy's announcement on May 25 of landing a man on the Moon before the decade's end. It goes back to July 1960, when the Apollo program was created as the successor to Mercury, initially aimed at flying a crewed flyby of the Moon to locate landing sites.
