Video from the channel Le Journal de l'Espace about Apollo 12, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 16:34. Language: French. Video type: Documentary.

What it's about

A compilation of pranks and humorous moments involving astronauts during their missions, opening with several Apollo 12 anecdotes. The narrator argues that keeping up morale is part of the job and goes through episodes that were in no flight plan.

Historical context

On November 20, 1969, during the second moonwalk in the Ocean of Storms, Alan Bean wanted to photograph himself with Pete Conrad in front of the Surveyor 3 probe using a delayed shutter release he had smuggled along, but he could not find it in time in the sample bag. Conrad had been Bean's instructor at the US Navy test pilot school, and the video contrasts the pair's relaxed tone with the solemnity of Apollo 11: Conrad named his landing site Pete's Parking Lot, and the backup crew slipped Playboy photos into the checklists strapped to the suits.

Highlights

The episode then moves on from Apollo 12. On Skylab 3, Owen Garriott had Houston hear a recording of his wife with Bob Crippen's help, and the crew left mannequins for the Skylab 4 crew. On Gemini 3, John Young smuggled a corned beef sandwich for Gus Grissom, whose crumbs led to a ban on that kind of food. On Gemini 6, in December 1965, Wally Schirra and Thomas Stafford reported an object in polar orbit and then played Jingle Bells. It closes with a prank by Chris Hadfield in 2013 and Scott Kelly's gorilla costume on the ISS.
