Video from the channel Segredos do Universo TVC about Apollo 12, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 2:25. Language: Portuguese. Video type: Documentary.
Short popular-science piece in Portuguese about the launch of Apollo 12, on 14 November 1969, which lifted off despite bad weather.
36 seconds into the flight, lightning struck the rocket, and 16 seconds later, a second strike hit it. The instruments began to fail and telemetry was lost, causing alarm in mission control.
Young engineer John Aaron proposed switching the signal conditioning equipment (SCE) to auxiliary mode. The switch was little known, and it was lunar module pilot Alan Bean who found it and flipped it. The systems recovered and the mission reached the Moon successfully.
