Apollo 11: Landing on the Moon
Video from the channel NASA about Apollo 11, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 2:37. Language: English. Video type: Documentary.
Short NASA piece that reconstructs the Apollo 11 Moon landing. It combines the original audio of communications between the spacecraft and mission control with testimonies recorded later by those who lived through the day.
Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins reached the Moon on Saturday, July 19, and the landing took place the next day, Sunday the 20th. The testimonies present the descent as the hardest part of any Apollo mission: a controlled fall from lunar orbit with fuel for only one attempt.
The trajectory was taking the module toward an inhospitable area. It had to be flown over at high speed, the spacecraft pitched up to slow down, and then brought down vertically. With fuel critically low, the 60- and 30-second callouts were made until the message came that the Eagle had landed at Tranquility Base, met with relief in Houston.
