What it's about

Spanish-dubbed version of the first documentary episode SpaceX made about Starship, titled "Test Like You Fly". It follows the company's engineers as they prepare version 3 of the system. There are scenes at Star Factory, the nearly one-million-square-foot factory where the ship and booster are built, and at the test stands. The throughline is the idea of testing the vehicle the way it will actually fly.

Historical context

Those interviewed explain that Starship is a fully reusable two-stage rocket: a booster that accelerates the ship, and the ship, which reaches orbit carrying people or cargo. The company arrived at it step by step, after Falcon 1, Falcon 9, cargo and crew Dragon, and Falcon Heavy. They review the first flight test campaign. Flight one lifted off, but the vehicle was lost. On flight two the booster reached engine cutoff and began its return. On flight three it completed the return burn, on flight four it splashed down, and on flight five it returned to the launch site, where the tower's arms caught it.

Key facts

Version 3 is a near-total redesign. Ship 39 is the first V3 ship and will be able to stay in orbit for 48 hours, dock with other ships and transfer propellant, a capability presented as key to the program. The Raptor 3 engine simplifies the V2 design, of which around 600 units were built, aiming for reusability comparable to aircraft engines. Booster 18, the first V3 booster, was destroyed by an explosion while the nitrogen system was being pressurized, with no propellant on board and no injuries. Booster 19 passed the cryogenic test, a roughly 12-hour run with propellant at about 80 K. It then carried out a 10-engine static fire that ended in an abort from the pad: half the engines showed mechanical damage and were replaced with engines from Booster 20. A second attempt with all 33 engines was aborted shortly after ignition due to a false low-pressure reading from deflector sensors. The documentary also recalls the explosion of a pressure tank on Ship 36 at the Massey's test site, which destroyed much of its facilities. Ten months later, the rebuilt site is again hosting a roughly 60-second static fire of the new ship.
