Did you know…
When will Starship fly?
Short answer
Starship already flies: SpaceX has been conducting integrated test flights of the full rocket (Super Heavy plus Starship) since April 2023, and as of October 2025 had logged eleven. What's missing is operational service: the first payload, in-orbit propellant transfer, and the Artemis Moon landing, which NASA doesn't expect before 2027 (as of May 2026).

A rocket that has already flown eleven times
The question starts from an outdated premise: Starship is not a project still awaiting its debut. The first integrated flight of the Super Heavy and Starship stack lifted off from Starbase (Texas) on April 20, 2023, and ended in a controlled destruction four minutes in. Since then SpaceX has carried out a string of test flights, eleven as of October 2025, in which it has reached near-orbital trajectories, recovered the Super Heavy booster with the launch tower's arms, and tested a controlled splashdown of the ship in the Indian Ocean.
What "flying" means for SpaceX
Each flight is part of an iterative development campaign: launch, observe what fails, fix it, and launch again within a few months. That's why Starship "flies" even though there is no regular commercial service yet. The milestones still missing are routine deployment of next-generation Starlink satellites, reuse of the upper stage, and above all, propellant transfer between two Starships in orbit, essential for lunar missions.
The schedule that matters
SpaceX is preparing a larger version of the vehicle, the V3, with Raptor 3 engines and greater capacity, which was due to debut in 2026. NASA depends on a lunar variant, the Starship HLS, to land astronauts on the Moon under the Artemis program; the agency does not expect that landing before 2027 and keeps revising dates. Meanwhile, the FAA authorizes each flight separately and has expanded the number of annual launches allowed from Texas, while SpaceX builds additional pads in Florida. Specific dates change with each test; the reliable approach is to check the manufacturer's website before each launch window.
