Eurofighter Typhoon C.16 Typhoon
The Spanish designation for the single-seat Eurofighter, in service since October 2004 with Ala 11 at Moron and later with Ala 14 at Albacete.
History
In Spain the Eurofighter Typhoon carries the designation C.16 Typhoon and entered service in October 2004. Its first home was Ala 11 of the Spanish Air Force at Moron air base in the province of Seville, and once those deliveries were complete the type also equipped Ala 14 at Albacete-Los Llanos air base. Within the Spanish designation sequence the letter C has covered air force fighters since 1978, and the C.16 follows the C.15, the McDonnell Douglas EF-18 Hornet, after the C.11 Mirage III, the C.12 F-4 Phantom II and the C.14 Mirage F1. Spain ordered seventy-three aircraft, delivered between May 2004 and January 2020, with seventy in operation as of August 2020; to these are added the later orders of the Halcon I and Halcon II programmes, to Tranche 4 standard, intended to replace the EF-18. In Spanish service the type took on air policing duties, and the consulted material records the loss of a single-seat aircraft on 9 June and of a two-seater on 24 August 2010.
