O Saab 340 é um turboélice regional bimotor para 30 a 36 passageiros, nascido de uma colaboração entre a Saab e a Fairchild, que voou pela primeira vez a 25 de janeiro de 1983. Chegou a ser o avião de curta distância mais vendido do mundo e construíram-se 459 unidades até 1999.

História

No início dos anos oitenta, a sueca Saab e a norte-americana Fairchild uniram forças para atacar o crescente mercado da aviação regional com um bimotor turboélice pensado para 30 a 36 passageiros. O avião, propulsionado por dois motores General Electric CT7, realizou o primeiro voo a 25 de janeiro de 1983 e entrou ao serviço comercial em 1984, com a suíça Crossair entre os seus primeiros operadores.

O acerto do desenho tornou-se claro de imediato: pouco depois do lançamento, o Saab 340 converteu-se no avião de curta distância mais vendido do mundo, com uma carteira de clientes repartida entre a Europa, a América e o Pacífico. A Fairchild acabou por abandonar o programa e a Saab assumiu sozinha a produção, que se manteve até 1999, quando as perdas acumuladas do negócio dos aviões regionais levaram a empresa a encerrar a linha depois de 459 exemplares.

Longe de desaparecer, o 340 demonstrou uma longevidade notável: décadas depois do fim da produção continua ao serviço ativo em tarefas de passageiros, carga e usos especiais, e serviu ainda de base a um derivado alongado, o Saab 2000.
