O Douglas DC-4 foi um quadrimotor de transporte sem pressurização cuja série de produção voou pela primeira vez a 14 de fevereiro de 1942. Produzido em massa como C-54 Skymaster militar durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, após o conflito tornou-se um dos pilares da aviação comercial do pós-guerra.

História
O DC-4 nasceu dos estudos da Douglas para dar às companhias aéreas norte-americanas um quadrimotor de grande capacidade, mas a entrada dos Estados Unidos na Segunda Guerra Mundial mudou-lhe o destino: a série de produção voou a 14 de fevereiro de 1942 e os aparelhos foram destinados diretamente ao esforço de guerra. Entre 1942 e janeiro de 1946 construíram-se 1.163 C-54 (R5D na Marinha norte-americana), que atravessaram os oceanos como transportes estratégicos.
Com a paz, o DC-4 encontrou o seu mercado natural. A Douglas construiu outros 79 DC-4 de nova fabricação depois da guerra, aos quais se juntaram centenas de C-54 excedentários convertidos para uso civil, com os quais numerosas companhias aéreas abriram ou repuseram as suas rotas de longo curso. O tipo participou ainda na ponte aérea de Berlim, uma das maiores operações de transporte aéreo da história. Por lhe faltar pressurização, cedo ficou atrás dos seus sucessores, mas a sua simplicidade e fiabilidade mantiveram-no ativo durante décadas: a retirada oficial do tipo situa-se em 1991 e mesmo depois alguns exemplares continuaram a voar como cargueiros.
A sua importância foi também dinástica: a fuselagem e a asa do DC-4 serviram de ponto de partida para os pressurizados DC-6 e DC-7, a família de aviões a pistão com que a Douglas dominou o transporte aéreo até à chegada dos jatos.
