L'ATR 72 è un aereo regionale bimotore turboelica a corto raggio sviluppato e costruito in Francia e in Italia da ATR, e il numero della sua designazione deriva dalla configurazione abituale da 72 posti. È tuttora in produzione e in servizio, ed è stato impiegato anche come trasporto aziendale, aereo da carico e pattugliatore marittimo.

Storia

ATR —Avions de transport régional in francese, Aerei da Trasporto Regionale in italiano— è la società congiunta con cui la francese Aérospatiale e l'italiana Aeritalia fusero negli anni ottanta i rispettivi lavori su una nuova generazione di aerei regionali. Il suo primo prodotto fu l'ATR 42, che volò il 16 agosto 1984. A metà di quel decennio la società volle offrire un apparecchio di maggiore capacità e sviluppò l'ATR 72 direttamente a partire dal 42: la differenza principale fu portare il massimo dei posti da 48 a 78, e a tale scopo la fusoliera venne allungata di 4,5 metri, si aumentò l'apertura alare, si montarono motori più potenti e si ampliò di circa il dieci per cento la capacità di combustibile. Il programma fu lanciato il 15 gennaio 1986, il prototipo volò il 27 ottobre 1988, la Direzione Generale dell'Aviazione Civile francese certificò il tipo il 25 settembre 1989 e il 27 ottobre di quell'anno la finlandese Finnair lo inaugurò in servizio commerciale.

Condividere la linea di montaggio di Tolosa con l'ATR 42, oltre alla maggior parte dei sottosistemi, dei componenti e dei metodi di fabbricazione, è stato decisivo per la longevità di entrambi i modelli: verso il 2015 il 42 era l'unico regionale da cinquanta posti ancora in produzione. L'evoluzione del 72 è proceduta per generazioni successive, con nuova avionica e motorizzazioni più moderne per ridurre consumi e costi operativi. La versione in produzione dall'ottobre del 2007 è la serie -600, annunciata il 2 ottobre di quell'anno, che rispetto alla -500 adotta motori PW127M migliorati, cabina di pilotaggio a schermi e un insieme di raffinamenti minori. Nel dicembre del 2015 l'EASA approvò una configurazione ad alta densità che portò il massimo da 74 a 78 posti, e al salone di Dubai del novembre 2021 ATR presentò il 72-600 con i nuovi PW127XT, con un venti per cento in meno di costi di manutenzione e un tre per cento in meno di consumi rispetto al PW127M.

Sul piano commerciale il turboelica ha sostenuto l'azienda in un mercato dominato dai jet regionali. Nel 2007 il portafoglio annuale segnò un record del programma con 113 apparecchi venduti, e alla fine del 2014 ATR contava 1000 ordini del tipo con 754 consegnati e un residuo di 246. La forte domanda della serie -600 portò a investire in una seconda linea di montaggio finale più moderna, in una maggiore superficie di hangar e in una nuova zona di finitura e consegna, con cui l'attività industriale di Tolosa quadruplicò l'impronta che aveva nel 2005; nel 2015 la dirigenza parlava di superare i novanta apparecchi all'anno con una capacità installata per 120. La produzione totale registrata dell'ATR 72 ammonta a 1233 esemplari, e Airbus mantiene il cinquanta per cento del capitale della società, che ha anche esplorato rimotorizzazioni come ponte verso un eventuale aereo da cento posti.
