Did you know…
What is the mig 29 equivalent to?
Short answer
The MiG-29 is the Soviet counterpart of the American F-16 Fighting Falcon and, in size and twin-engine layout, of the F/A-18 Hornet: a light, agile air-superiority fighter conceived in the 1970s to fly from front-line airfields, while the larger Su-27 mirrors the F-15 Eagle. Its empty weight, near 11,000 kg (24,000 lb), sits between the two.

The light fighter of a high-low mix
Both superpowers arrived at the same idea in the 1970s: a heavy, long-range fighter with a big radar, and a light, cheaper one bought in larger numbers. In the United States the pair became the F-15 Eagle and the F-16; in the Soviet Union, the Su-27 and the MiG-29. The MiG's role, mission radius and unit cost therefore correspond to the F-16's, and Western analysts described it that way from the moment it appeared. In layout, however, the MiG-29 is closer to the F/A-18 Hornet: two engines, twin fins, leading-edge root extensions and, in the MiG-29K, a carrier variant.
Where the comparison holds and where it breaks
Speed, ceiling and climb favour the MiG-29: about Mach 2.25 (2,400 km/h) and 18,000 m (59,000 ft) against roughly Mach 2 and 15,000 m for the F-16, and its R-73 missile with a helmet sight gave it an edge in close combat that NATO discovered when it flew ex-East German aircraft in the 1990s. The F-16 has the advantage in range, cockpit ergonomics, radar and, above all, in the growth built into its avionics. The early MiG-29 carried about 3,500 kg (7,700 lb) of internal fuel and had no in-flight refuelling, so its combat radius was much shorter, and its analogue cockpit aged fast.
Later versions change the picture
The MiG-29M, MiG-29K and MiG-35 introduced more fuel, digital cockpits, an AESA radar and precision weapons, bringing the family closer to the F-16 Block 50, the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the Rafale in versatility. In service terms the most telling comparisons come from air forces that operated both, such as Poland with its F-16C and MiG-29A: the American aircraft flies more hours at lower cost, while the MiG remains a capable dogfighter with a shorter reach.
