An offensive to lift the siege of Tobruk
Operation Crusader took place between 18 November and 30 December 1941. Its purpose was to bypass the Axis defenses on the Egyptian-Libyan border, defeat the Axis armored forces near Tobruk, lift the siege of the city and reoccupy Cyrenaica. Storms on the night before the offensive grounded aircraft on both sides.
The Axis air balance
The operation's tally includes around 332 aircraft destroyed and around 228 abandoned. According to their own records, between 18 November and 20 January the Germans in Libya lost at least 232 aircraft from all causes, and the Italians at least 100.
The wrecks found at the airfields
An assessment of the aircraft found at the airfields involved left out some fields, such as Sidi Rezegh and Magrun, and also did not include any aircraft crashed or wrecked in a forced landing away from an airfield. Among the aircraft that had almost certainly been lost in ongoing operations were the Me 109F and the Mc 202, as well as a good number of the Ju 88. The number of wrecks found at the airfields indicates no more than the absolute minimum of aircraft lost by the Axis between 10 June 1940 and the end of December 1941.
