A club of twenty operators

Boeing presents the H-47 Chinook as the heavy-lift helicopter of choice for the United States Army and 20 international operators (as of October 2026). Among the countries it cites are Australia, Argentina and Canada. The military version has been exported to numerous countries, with the US Army and the Royal Air Force as its two largest users.

Licensed manufacturing

Part of that spread is due to production outside the United States. Agusta, later AgustaWestland and now Leonardo, built the Chinook under license in Italy, and Kawasaki does so in Japan. The Italian-built aircraft were exported to countries such as Iran and Libya in the 1970s, while the Japanese-built ones equip the country's self-defense forces.

Early customers and recent orders

Australia was the first export customer, in 1973, and Canada the second, in 1974. New orders have not stopped: in 2009 the United Kingdom announced the purchase of 24 new CH-47Fs, Australia ordered seven CH-47Fs in March 2010, India approved the purchase of 15 CH-47Fs in September 2015, and Singapore announced in November 2016 that the CH-47F would replace its older Chinooks. Chinooks from several nations, including the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada and Australia, took part in the war in Afghanistan. In addition, the civilian version, the Boeing Vertol 234, has flown with commercial operators for transport, firefighting and support to the logging, construction and oil extraction industries.
