Did you know…

How much does a Falcon 9 cost?

Short answer

A Falcon 9 launch costs a commercial customer around $70 million, according to the list price SpaceX publishes (as of September 2026). That's the price of the service, not the rocket: SpaceX doesn't sell the vehicle, and the internal cost of a flight with a reused first stage is estimated to be well below that figure.

The list price and what it includes

SpaceX publishes a baseline price of about $70 million for a dedicated Falcon 9 launch, with capacity of up to 22.8 t to low Earth orbit or 8.3 t to geostationary transfer orbit in expendable configuration (as of September 2026). The figure covers the vehicle, pad operations, tracking, and payload integration. Institutional customers pay more: contracts with NASA or the Department of Defense typically run between $90 and $150 million per mission, since they include extra certification, documentation, and mission-assurance requirements.

What the rocket actually costs

Nobody buys a Falcon 9; they buy a launch service, and SpaceX's internal cost is considerably lower than the price. The first stage now flies more than twenty times, the payload fairing is recovered and reused, and only the second stage is lost on each mission. Elon Musk stated in 2020 that the marginal cost of a flight with a reused stage was around $15 million; other estimates put it between $20 and $30 million. SpaceX doesn't publish detailed accounting, so the exact margin is unknown, but the gap between cost and price funds the development of Starship and Starlink.

Rideshare: the other price scale

For small payloads there's a rideshare program, where dozens of satellites share a single rocket. The announced minimum fare is about $300,000 for 50 kg to sun-synchronous orbit, with additional per-kilogram pricing (as of September 2026). This model has lowered the cost of access to space to a level unthinkable twenty years ago, when a launch comparable to a Falcon 9's cost double or triple that, and it explains much of the vehicle's commercial dominance.
