Did you know…

How high do fighter jets fly?

Short answer

Fighter jets operate almost always between 9,000 and 12,000 m (30,000-40,000 ft), like airliners, and climb to their service ceiling for interception: above 15,240 m (50,000 ft) for the F-16, 16,765 m (55,000 ft) for the Eurofighter Typhoon and 19,800 m (65,000 ft) for the F-15, per official specs. On penetration runs they fly at 60-150 m.

The usual range: between 9,000 and 15,000 metres

Modern fighter jets operate most of the time between 9,000 and 12,000 m (30,000-40,000 ft), the same band used by airliners, because the thin air there reduces drag and fuel burn. In combat or interception they climb higher: an F-16 has a service ceiling above 15,240 m (50,000 ft), the Eurofighter Typhoon reaches 16,765 m (55,000 ft) and the F-15 Eagle reaches 19,800 m (65,000 ft), according to its operators' official specifications. Above 18,000 m almost no fighter can sustain level flight: the engines lose thrust and the wing barely generates lift, although in brief ballistic climbs some have exceeded 20,000 m.

Why they don't always fly high

Altitude is an advantage for radar and for missiles, which reach farther when launched from above and at speed, but it comes with trade-offs. The pilot needs an oxygen mask and an anti-g suit, the cockpit is only partially pressurised, and above 12,000 m a depressurisation forces an immediate descent. That's why training and air-policing patrols are planned at medium altitudes, with the ceiling reserved for specific manoeuvres.

The opposite: low-level flight

Fighter-bombers also do the exact opposite. To penetrate defended airspace they fly at 60-150 m (200-500 ft) above the ground, below the horizon of enemy radars, following the terrain at over 900 km/h. This is the profile of aircraft such as the Tornado or the Su-24, and it is still practised in the valleys of Wales, Scotland or Nevada. Between these two extremes, a fighter has no single "own" altitude: it picks one according to the mission, the threat and the fuel available.
