Video from the channel TheAMCMuseum about Lockheed C-130 Hercules, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 10:29. Language: English. Video type: Onboard.

What's toured

A guided tour of a C-130E Hercules on display at the Air Mobility Command Museum in Dover (Delaware). The tour covers the exterior, with the engines and nose, then moves through the crew door, the flight deck and the cargo hold.

Details shown

The guide shows the variable-pitch propellers of the four turboprops and their feathered position, which reduces drag if an engine is lost. Beneath the cockpit is a compartment packed with avionics that needed frequent replacement. In the cockpit are the pilot and copilot seats, the center console with the throttle levers, the overhead panel, and the flight engineer's and navigator's stations. Behind them is a bunk bench for resting, the sextant for celestial navigation, and circuit-breaker panels. The cargo hold has seats for nearly a hundred troops, stretchers for the wounded, and a pallet rigged for parachute drop; it holds five standard pallets. Also visible are the rear ramp, the side jump doors, and the portable toilet.

Context

This example dates from 1969 and served at Stewart (Tennessee), Little Rock (Arkansas) and Pope (North Carolina) bases. The C-130 has been built since the mid-1950s and flies in more than 60 countries in about 40 versions. These include hurricane hunters, the AC-130 gunship with a 105 mm howitzer, the Combat Talon II, the Combat Shadow for helicopter air refueling, the EC-130 Compass Call jammer, and firefighting aircraft. A C-130 dropped the MOAB bomb in Afghanistan in 2017. Its cruise speed is around 335 mph.
