An Il-86 for long haul
On 26 June 1972 the Soviet cabinet ordered development of a long-range version of the Il-86, the Il-86D — from «дальний», dal'niy, «long-range». Design was completed in June 1976. The Il-86D would have had a marginally extended wing span, additional fuel and a range of some 8,500 km, the natural answer to the problem the basic model carried from the start: engines too thirsty for the range asked of it.
The D-18-powered version
Later announcements stated that a version of the Il-86D with Lotarev D-18 engines had entered development in March 1975. Its figures already set it apart from the original Il-86: 147,500 kg empty weight, 300,000 kg maximum take-off weight, some 150,000 kg of fuel, 325 m² of wing area and 10,200 km of range. That path did not end in an improved Il-86 but in a different aircraft: the Il-86D evolved into the Ilyushin Il-96.
