The Fokker V.5 corrected the V.4's control defects with ailerons and elevator fitted with aerodynamic horn balance, and added interplane struts that reduced wing flexing in flight. It first flew on 5 July 1917 and became the direct basis for the Dr.I's production series; two pre-production examples very close to this design, redesignated F.I, were delivered in August 1917 to the aces Manfred von Richthofen and Werner Voss of Jagdgeschwader I. Like the later production aircraft, it used the German Oberursel Ur.II rotary engine of 110 hp (81 kW).
