Boeing B-52 Stratofortress B-52C

The B-52C's fuel capacity (and range) was increased to 41,700 US gallons by adding larger 3,000-US-gallon underwing tanks; gross weight rose 30,000 lb to 450,000 lb. A new fire-control system, the MD-9, was introduced. The aircraft's belly was painted anti-flash white to reflect the thermal radiation of a nuclear detonation. The RB-52C designation, planned for reconnaissance-fitted aircraft like the RB-52B, was quickly abandoned since all 35 B-52Cs built could carry the pod interchangeably. Engines were the same 47 kN-rated Pratt & Whitney J57s used on the B-52B.
