The 747-400 modernised the original jumbo with a two-crew cockpit, winglets and more efficient engines, becoming the best-selling version of the family.
Development
Launched in 1985 and first flown on 29 April 1988, it introduced digital avionics that removed the flight engineer.
Service
With 694 aircraft delivered between 1989 and 2009, it was the backbone of intercontinental long-haul flying for two decades.
