Video from the channel Space Trends about New Glenn, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 10:19. Language: English. Video type: News.

What's being announced

Blue Origin unveiled an enlarged version of New Glenn, known as 9×4. The first stage goes from seven to nine BE-4 engines, and the upper stage from two to four BE-3U engines, all with more thrust. According to the video, it will be able to carry more than 70 metric tons to low Earth orbit, more than 20 toward the Moon, and about 14 directly to geostationary orbit, with a payload fairing 8.7 meters in diameter. The first stage and the fairing are designed to be recovered and reused, and the stage gets a reinforced heat shield.

Context

The announcement came a week after the second flight of the original New Glenn. In that flight, the upper stage delivered its payload into the planned orbit, and the first stage, after the boostback, reentry and landing burns, touched down vertically on the recovery ship.

What it means

The narrator compares the new design to the Falcon 9 and to Starship's payload fairing, notes criticism from those who see it as a copy of SpaceX's solutions, and argues that Blue Origin remains far behind its competitor in launch cadence and reusability.
