Did you know…
Which was the first VC-121A with weather radar?
Short answer
The "Bataan", serial number 48-613. Delivered as a C-121A in January 1949, it took part in the Berlin Airlift and in 1950 was converted into a VC-121A for VIP transport. It was General Douglas MacArthur's personal aircraft in the Korean War and the first VC-121A fitted with weather radar.

From the airlift to VIP transport
The aircraft that would come to be called Bataan was built with serial number 48-613 and delivered to the United States Air Force in January 1949 as a C-121A, the military transport version derived from the civilian Constellation. Its first mission was one of the most famous of the postwar period: it took part in the Berlin Airlift, the operation that supplied the blockaded city by air. In 1950 it was converted into a VC-121A, the variant fitted out to transport VIPs.
MacArthur's aircraft
Named Bataan, in memory of the Philippine peninsula where one of the hardest battles of the Pacific War was fought, it became General Douglas MacArthur's personal aircraft during the Korean War. It was also the first VC-121A fitted with weather radar, equipment that allowed the crew to detect and avoid storms, a valuable feature for an aircraft dedicated to transporting senior commanders across the Pacific in the middle of a war.
A long civilian life
The Bataan was retired from military service in 1965. NASA later used it under the registration N422NA, and it later passed to the United States Army Aviation Museum and to the Planes of Fame Air Museum, where it was on display for several years. In 2015 it was acquired by a new owner and today it is operated by the Lewis Air Legends Foundation, in the United States, a foundation dedicated to preserving historic aircraft, which has restored it as a testament to one of the most intense chapters in the history of the military Constellation.
