Did you know…
What is apollo 11 mission?
Short answer
The first mission to land humans on the Moon's surface. It launched on July 16, 1969 at 13:32 UT aboard a Saturn V from Pad 39A; the lunar module Eagle landed on July 20 at 20:17:40 UT in Mare Tranquillitatis with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, who spent 21 hours and 36 minutes there.

Three men and two spacecraft
Apollo 11 was the mission that fulfilled the United States' goal of putting people on the Moon and bringing them home. It launched on July 16, 1969 at 13:32 UT (9:32 a.m. EDT) from Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center, lifted by the Saturn V SA-504, with Neil Armstrong as commander, Michael Collins piloting the command module Columbia, and Buzz Aldrin as pilot of the lunar module Eagle. Collins never landed: his job was to keep Columbia in lunar orbit and recapture Eagle on its return — the only spacecraft capable of bringing anyone home.
Twenty-one hours at Mare Tranquillitatis
Eagle touched down on July 20 at 20:17:40 UT (4:17:40 p.m. EDT) in Mare Tranquillitatis. Armstrong climbed down the ladder about 109 hours and 42 minutes after launch, and the moonwalk, lasting more than two and a half hours, ended at 111 hours and 39 minutes into the mission. During that time the two astronauts deployed the EASEP instrument package, took photographs and collected 21.55 kg of lunar rock and soil. Their total time on the surface, almost all of it inside the module, was 21 hours and 36 minutes.
What was left behind
The ascent stage lifted off on July 21 at 17:54:01 UT, docked with Columbia at 21:34:00 UT, and after the July 22 trans-Earth injection, the capsule splashed down in the Pacific on July 24 at 16:50:35 UT, with a total mission time of 195 hours, 18 minutes and 35 seconds. Beyond the symbolism, Apollo 11 left two lasting legacies: a set of samples still studied in laboratories around the world, and proof that a crewed flight could leave Earth's vicinity, operate on another celestial body, and return on schedule.
