Why is artemis 2 going to the moon?

Short answer

Artemis II let NASA test, with astronauts aboard, what had only been tried uncrewed: that Orion can carry people to the Moon and bring them home. It flew from April 1 to 10, 2026, with four crew members, and validated deep-space life support.

No spacecraft had carried people beyond low Earth orbit since the end of the Apollo program. Resuming that kind of flight requires demonstrating, with people on board, that the vehicle works: that life support keeps conditions livable for days and that propulsion, power, thermal control and navigation respond as expected. Artemis II was that demonstration. NASA defined it as the program's first crewed Artemis mission, meant to verify that Orion can sustain astronauts on longer missions and let them rehearse the operations essential for Artemis III and what comes after.

What happened in ten days

The crew—NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and the Canadian Space Agency's Jeremy Hansen—launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 1, 2026, and splashed down off San Diego on April 10. They evaluated the life-support systems, carried out manual piloting demonstrations, rehearsed emergency procedures, tested the suits and ran scientific investigations, including the AVATAR study on how tissue responds to microgravity and deep-space radiation.

The side benefit

A test flight doesn't have to be sterile. Looping around the Moon, Orion reached 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the distance record Apollo 13 had held since 1970, and passed within 4,067 miles of the lunar surface. From there the crew took more than 7,000 images and documented the topography of the south pole region, the area where the program's first landing is planned. The total distance traveled was 695,081 miles. In practice, the test also served as advance reconnaissance.
