Did you know…

When does the 737 MAX 10 come out?

Short answer

There's no firm date. The 737 MAX 10 first flew on June 18, 2021, and by mid-2026 it still lacked FAA type certification; Boeing places it behind the MAX 7, whose certification was expected in 2026, so first deliveries to United wouldn't arrive before late 2026 or 2027 (as of May 2026).

The biggest of the family

The 737 MAX 10 is the longest version of the 737: a 43.8 m fuselage, 1.6 m longer than the MAX 9, seating up to 230 passengers in a single class and offering a range of around 6,100 km (3,300 nmi). To let such a long fuselage rotate on takeoff without striking the runway, Boeing designed an articulated main landing gear that extends about 24 cm on takeoff and retracts into the same wheel well as before. It was launched at the 2017 Paris Air Show in Le Bourget as a direct response to the A321neo, and the first prototype flew out of Renton on June 18, 2021.

Why it has been delayed

Certification got caught up in the changes that followed the MAX 8 crashes of 2018 and 2019. A 2020 US law required a modern crew alerting system (EICAS) on any aircraft certified after December 2022; Boeing requested an exemption, and Congress granted it in late 2022 in exchange for additional improvements. Then a problem surfaced in the engine anti-ice system, common to the whole family, forcing a redesign of the inlet duct and new testing. On top of that came the quality crisis following the Alaska Airlines MAX 9 door-panel incident in January 2024 and heightened FAA scrutiny over every step of the program.

Timeline and customers

Boeing places MAX 7 certification ahead of MAX 10's, both expected in 2026, though the manufacturer has repeatedly pushed back these dates since 2022 (as of May 2026). The program has racked up more than a thousand orders and commitments according to Boeing itself: United Airlines is the launch customer and largest buyer, followed by Delta, Ryanair, Alaska Airlines, and Virgin Australia. Several of these airlines have accepted MAX 8s and MAX 9s in the meantime as temporary substitutes.
