A drama about Marine Corps aviators

Flying Leathernecks was released in 1951, shot in Technicolor, directed by Nicholas Ray and starring John Wayne and Robert Ryan. The film details the combat action and personal conflicts of United States Marine Corps aviators during World War II. Producer Edmund Grainger set it in motion as a deliberate attempt to repeat the success of Sands of Iwo Jima, John Wayne's popular film from two years earlier, which was a critical and box-office hit and earned the actor his first Oscar nomination. Wayne's character was inspired by Captain John Lucian Smith, a Medal of Honor recipient who had commanded VMF-223 in actual combat in 1942.

The Corsair, star of the second half

The Vought F4U Corsair features very prominently in the second half of the film. In the plot, the protagonist returns to the same unit and the same men, now equipped with F4U Corsair fighters, and leads them against Japanese troops and kamikaze attacks during the Battle of Okinawa.

Where and with which aircraft it was filmed

Principal photography began in November 1950 at the Marine Corps bases of Camp Pendleton and El Toro, and in February 1951 moved to the RKO-Pathé studios for the soundstage sequences. For the location shots at MCAS Camp Pendleton, between November 1950 and February 1951, Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats from VMT-2 at MCAS El Toro and Vought F4U-4 Corsair fighters from VMF-232 were used.
