Did you know…
How much does the MiG-29 cost?
Short answer
A new MiG-29 cost between 25 and 50 million dollars per unit in the export contracts of the 1990s and 2000s: Malaysia paid around 30 million per MiG-29N and India about 50 per naval MiG-29K. It is no longer sold new, and second-hand aircraft are transferred at much lower prices (data as of September 2026).

A cheap fighter to buy, not so cheap to maintain
The MiG-29 was designed in the Soviet Union as a lightweight air-superiority fighter to operate from forward bases, and more than 1,600 units have been built since 1983. Its sale price was always one of its selling points against the F-16: in the export contracts of the 1990s, such as Malaysia's 18 MiG-29Ns, the unit cost was around 30 million dollars. The MiG-29K naval version ordered by India in 2010, 29 aircraft for about 1.5 billion dollars, pushed the figure to around 50 million dollars per aircraft including spares and support. The trade-off is an RD-33 engine with a short service life and high maintenance consumption, which multiplies the cost over the aircraft's operational life.
Second-hand transfers and upgrades
Many of the MiG-29s that change hands do so through transfers. Germany handed over its 22 aircraft inherited from East Germany to Poland in 2003 for a symbolic one euro each, and Slovakia delivered its 13 to Ukraine in 2023. Upgrading is another route: India contracted in 2008 to upgrade 62 fighters to the UPG standard for about 964 million dollars, around 15 million per aircraft. Retired examples that go up for auction, such as Hungary's, are offered at collector prices.
What is being compared when talking about price
When citing the cost of a fighter, it is worth distinguishing the factory list price, the cost of the full contract with weapons, simulators and support, and the cost per flight hour. For the MiG-29 the first is low, the second depends on the negotiated package, and the third is high compared with Western fighters of its generation, which explains why many operators have retired it ahead of schedule.
