Did you know…

Did Corsairs ever face German fighters in combat?

Short answer

No: the Corsair never met a German fighter in combat, though both Grumman types did. Its main European operations were the Operation Tungsten strikes on the Tirpitz in 1944, with Corsairs from HMS Victorious and HMS Formidable providing fighter cover. On those raids they appear to have met no aerial opposition.

Europe: cover, not air combat

The Corsair never actually faced a German fighter in combat, while both Grumman types did, with positive results. The first and also most important European operations were the series of Operation Tungsten strikes in April, July, and August 1944 against the German battleship Tirpitz, for which Corsairs from HMS Victorious and HMS Formidable provided fighter cover. The Corsairs apparently met no aerial opposition on those raids. Despite never having entered air-to-air combat over Europe, a Corsair was captured by the Luftwaffe and thoroughly tested by it. The aircraft was flying alongside a Fairey Barracuda and, due to technical problems, made an emergency landing in a field in the municipality of Hamarøy, north of Bodø, in Norway.

The timeline

Corsairs first entered combat in August 1942, when the Luftwaffe was still probably the most powerful, best trained, and most experienced air force in the world.

Where it did fight

F4U and FG pilots claimed 2,140 air-to-air victories against 189 losses to enemy aircraft, an overall ratio above 11:1. Against the best Japanese adversaries it was credited with a ratio of 12:1 against the Mitsubishi A6M Zero and 6:1 against the combined group of the Nakajima Ki-84, the Kawanishi N1K-J, and the Mitsubishi J2M. Some Japanese pilots considered it the most formidable American fighter.
