Did you know…
How much apollo 11 cost?
Short answer
NASA never published a price for Apollo 11 on its own; what is documented is the program. The United States spent $25.8 billion on Project Apollo between 1960 and 1973, about $309 billion in 2025 dollars (data as of 2025), of which $6.6 billion went on the Saturn V.

A program bill, not a mission bill
The money that put Eagle on the Sea of Tranquility was spent over thirteen years, on design, testing, factories, a launch complex and the flights themselves. The United States spent $25.8 billion on Project Apollo between 1960 and 1973, about $309 billion in 2025 dollars. Counting Gemini and the robotic probes that scouted the surface first, the bill reaches $28 billion, roughly $338 billion adjusted. Hardware dominates the ledger: $6.6 billion ($80 billion adjusted) for the Saturn V, $3.8 billion (about $47 billion) for the Command and Service Module and $2.4 billion (about $28 billion) for the lunar module. Most of that bought a capability rather than any single mission.
What the Moon was quoted at
The commitment came with a price attached. In his special message to Congress of 25 May 1961, Kennedy asked for 531 million dollars in fiscal '62 and an estimated seven to nine billion dollars additional over the next five years to land a man on the Moon and return him safely. The eventual total ran far beyond that first sketch, the usual fate of estimates written before the vehicle exists.
Why Apollo 11 has no invoice
Apollo was accounted for by element — launch vehicles, spacecraft, operations, support — not flight by flight, so no audited figure exists for the eleventh mission on its own. The per-mission numbers that circulate are later reconstructions: they split shared development costs among flights by rules their authors choose, which is why the figure quoted for Apollo 11 varies so widely from one source to the next. The comparison that holds is the program against what it bought: a transport system to the Moon, built in a decade, at the cost of three out of every five dollars the space program spent in those years.
