Suez, October 1956

In addition to Indochina, French Corsairs saw action in Algeria and at Suez before their retirement in 1964. Flotillas 14.F and 15.F took part in the Anglo-French-Israeli operation over the Suez Canal in October 1956.

Algeria and Bizerte

French F4U-7s, with some borrowed AU-1s, from Flotillas 12F, 14F, 15F and 17F flew missions during the Algerian War between 1955 and 1962. The aircraft began operating against Algerian insurgents in 1955. In 1961, in response to the blockade of the Tunisian air base, French Corsairs completed more than 150 sorties without any losses before their retirement on 28 September 1964.

The F4U-7, a Corsair built for the Aéronavale

The last production Corsair was the F4U-7, built specifically for the French naval air arm, the Aéronavale. The first F4U-7s were delivered to Flottille 14F at Karouba air base, near Bizerte (Tunisia), on 15 January 1953, and on 17 April 1954 the unit arrived at Da Nang. The French Navy used its F4U-7s in the second half of the First Indochina War, in the 1950s, with Flotillas 12.F, 14.F and 15.F. Thirty-six Corsairs with yellow and black wing bands flew from the carriers Arromanches and La Fayette, with the loss of one aircraft to anti-aircraft fire and another in a landing accident. The Aéronavale used 163 Corsairs — 94 F4U-7s and 69 AU-1s — and the last ones, with 14.F based at Cuers, were retired from service in September 1964.
